about

A Bill Monroe traditional tune about a female moonshiner named Corey (Cora). Our version owes more to Bruce Hornsby than Bill Monroe however.

lyrics

Darling Corey (Traditional)

Cho: Dig a hole, dig a hole in the meadow
Dig a hole in the cold, cold ground
Dig a hole, dig a hole in the meadow
Gonna lay darling Corey down

First time I saw darling Corey
By the banks of the deep blue sea
Had a .45 pistol in her pocket
And a banjo on her knee

Wake up, wake up, darling Corey
What makes you sleep so sound?
The revenue men are coming
Gonna drag your still house down

Wake up, wake up, darling Corey
Wake up and get my gun
I’m not a man for trouble
But I’ll die before I’ll run

They asked Lisa to sing with them because their voices both stunk and hers was very good. The name "The June Bugs" was chosen after an extensive free-association-by-email. ... more
